DR. DAVID FRANCIS ALEXICK

Professor David Francis Alexick was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on January 25, 1942. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree at the Richmond Professional Institute Of the College of William and Mary in 1964. Later he received his Master of Fine Arts Degree from Virginia Commonwealth University which is what the old "R.P.I." evolved into.
After teaching for two years at York College of Pennsylvania he went into the doctoral program at the Pennsylvania State University.
In the summer prior to attending Penn State he traveled extensively in Europe visiting museums in London, Oxford, Paris, Amsterdam, Venice, Florence and Rome, with side trips to Pompeii and Herculano. While in Europe he also attended a summer artists workshop given by the American School in Venice. The studies there focused on Venetian art and architecture with visits to the major architectural monuments in and around Venice whch included several of the major Palladian Villas in the Veneto region of Venice which included the Villa Rotunda. Studio work was also carried out in the Monastery of the San Giorgio Church. He also studied Venetian Music and was able to use the research library of the Giorgio Cini Foundation.
After completing his doctoral studies he took a full time position at Longwood College teaching Painting, Ceramics, Art Education and supervised student teachers.
While teaching at Longwood he purchased a lovely brick Anti-Bellum Italian style home which he spent five years restoring. While at Longwood he met and married Helen Cecelia Fecher a former nun of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namure whose career had taken her to teaching assignments in Washington, D.C., New York, and Kenya in East Africa.
Shortly after this he completed his dissertation and received his doctorate in Art Education in 1976. Shortly after this Dr. Alexick moved the family to Houston, Texas then later to Worcester, Mass. where he became the Assistant Curator of Education until moving to Tidewater, Virginia where he began teaching at Christopher Newport College, William and Mary and Thomas Nelson Community College.
He became a board member at the Peninsula Fine Arts Center and was a board member during the development of the new wing. He also served on the program committees for several years.
Professor Alexick moved to the Williamsburg area in 1988 and has since built a 400 square foot studio where he continues to work on his painting and sculpture. The current excitement in Dr. Alexick's life is selling a painting to Paramount studios for use in a film production.
